A couple of years ago I moved to Nixa, to the Autumn Corners Retirement Community. To purchase a condo, you have to be at least 55. I barely met the age requirement, but was excited to hear about a place that gave me more time for my interests instead of always trying to keep the yard looking good, the exterior painted and all the stuff done that comes with home ownership.
When I got settled, my friends started asking me how I liked my new place. They had actually been making fun of me, thinking I had moved into a nursing home to be medicated and cared for. I reserved the club house (because it has a gas grill) cooked some burgers and invited everyone over to see for themselves that I still had my own place, and that I was not checking out any time soon. They were impressed and happy for me but not willing to make the move themselves; thinking instead that their adult children would decide when it was time for them to give up the old homestead.
Their comments got me thinking. Maybe people my age don’t realize that such a cool place to live is available. As I asked my friends and co-workers about retirement community living, some said “ Oh, I’m not ready for that yet.” What ever that means. When I pressed for a real reason, the answers were, well, kind of embarrassing. Here are the top ten excuses people gave for not making life easy on themselves:
- “I like washing my own windows and can not imagine turning that over to someone else to do twice a year.”
- “Dad still likes to mow his own yard. And when it is too hot, he likes to pay the lawn service the $65 a week.”
- “Walking around the lake on the walkways might be nice, but when I want to take a walk I can just drive to the mall and pound the cement floor walking in circles.”
- “Me, play cards ? I haven’t played cards in ages.”
- “Shoveling snow is no problem. Our son lives in Walnut Grove and doesn’t mind coming by to clear our drive for us.”
- “I don’t know if I would want a bunch of old folks for neighbors.”
- “I still have Tommy’s football gear from when he played at SMS back in 1979. What would I do with all of his stuff.”
- “My kids expect to be able to come home one week a year. I should keep this 4 bedroom 3 bath house for when the grand kids visit.”
- “I plan to work for who knows how long; I’m still in good health and don’t need to plan for my future.”
10. “I have lived here most of my life and am not leaving until I have to be carried out feet first; even if I might enjoy living somewhere else and actually have my needs better met.”
So that is why the secret is still under cover; people don’t know what a retirement community is and are certain that it’s not for them. So, if you need assistance, yes you need to be looking in to assisted living. A retirement community is for the active and young at heart, still learning and having a good time. If you don’t think this is the right life style for you, then you are right. We wouldn’t try to talk you into enjoying yourself after you have worked so hard all your life.
